Cultured Cabbage Juice
Dec 21st, 2007 by Matt S
Recently I have been experimenting with Cultured Cabbage Juice, and although I seem to be getting less interest from the ladies after drinking it – it does make me feel better.
I got the idea from this web page . What I basically do is chop up cabbage, fine enough so your blender can handle it. Toss it in the blender along with enough water to fill the blender about 2/3 of the way full and then blend until there is just cabbage liquid. I then add the cabbage liquid to a large 2L ice tea jug. I fill it with two more blenders full of the cabbage liquid, cover the top with a paper towel secured by a rubber band, and then wait. After 3 days, I take the paper towel off the top and pour the cabbage liquid through a fine strainer into another pitcher. The cabbage pulp is fine so you need a fine strainer to catch it. Sometimes it takes a while for the liquid to drain, so I will help it by slowly pressing my fist on top of the cabbage juice/pulp mixture. After a decent amount of liquid has been forced out, I toss the pulp in the trash can and pour more of the pulp through the strainer. Once all of the cabbage liquid/pulp has been poured trough the strainer there is just juice left in the other pitcher.
I drink the juice mixed half/half with water. It is pretty strong stuff in both taste and effect. I don’t drink coffee, but the zing it gives has got to be similar to the zing that comes from a doubleshot expresso or whatever the latest coffee drink is.
Make sure the cabbage is fresh and organic. The fermentation process is similar to making sourkraut, except there is no salt to knock back some of the bacteria. Good fresh, organic cabbage should have all of the bacteria it needs to ferment OK already hosted on its leaves. I have made 3 batches so far and they have all turned out OK. The last batch I was a little iffy about, the cabbage had been sitting in the fridge for a couple of weeks and there were those black spots of the edges of some of the leaves. I chopped off all of the bad parts and went for it, not wanting to waste 4 pounds of cabbage and everything was OK… your mileage may vary.
A couple things. I have Crohn’s. I stepped my way through about 10 different diets after the standard drugs proved downright harmful. Backed into the Specific Carbohydrate Diet – though MORE restricted. Essentially: 95% of calories come from protein(plain fish, chicken, turkey, beef, etc), 5% from cooked veggies. I’ve been on it for 5 years. Brought me from the brink to nearly full health (still have stomach and mild small intestinal soreness). Getting to my point, I’m starting to re-introduce foods – plain cabbage juice being added for stomach & duodenal ulcers/erosion. It’s working well so far – sharp pains have all become very limited soreness. Was wondering your results after the above post. Also curious if you tried Kefir as other sites recommend it and it’s more of the same culturing concept.
Charlie – Glad to hear that you have found something that brings you to almost health. I don’t know if we will ever get to perfect health, but maybe – read on.
I am doing excellent right now. I’m drinking around a total of one cup per day of fermented cabbage. Around 1:4 ratio of juice to water makes a refreshing drink that is sour and cabbage tasting, but light and refreshing at the same time. It takes a little getting used to, but is something I look foward to now.
Just last night I went for a mile walk which would have been hard for me to do before. Pre-cabbage juice – if I had to go to the bathroom I had to go within 1-2 minutes, otherwise I would have an accident. This meant hesitation to do lots of things that involved unknown / no bathroom environments. Around a month and a half ago (end of April/beginning of May) I noticed that if I had to use the bathroom I could hold it. Big big change for me. I have had urgency issues for the last 7 or 8 years and they are almost gone!
A couple of caveats, I have been doing Progressive Muscle Relaxation a few times a week for the past 3 months are so. My stress levels right now are low, but were high a bit ago and I did OK through it. Usually would have had to limit diet a lot, but didn’t need too. I’m taking no conventional medicine.
I didn’t realize I had started the cabbage juice way back in December. I’ve been doing it for a while. I know it helped soon after taking it, but it took around 4 months to really get me to the next level. I’ve been enjoying Bojangles’ chicken biscuit combo with seasoned fries and iced tea – something that would have been unthinkable 5 months ago.
Regarding Keifer – I did try it around 4 years ago. Got the Keifer grain in the mail from a recommended source, fermented it with milk and got a very yeasty drink that didn’t sit well. I’ve always felt like I’ve had some yeast intolerance and felt it big time after drinking the keifer. The rest of the drink went down the drain and the grain went it the compost pile.
can anyone else to the fermented juice!!!. I would love to ry it. I also know that the red cabbage is very good for health… I wonder I f i could try it with the red one???
II have a colon problem. Don’t know if its crohn’s but know gluten intolerant for sure. Some foods irritate the gut badly. Can I just use the water off of ground up cabbage with whatever juice is extracted to get fresh cabbage juice? I really need to try the juice for my stomach pain and colon are keeping me down and I am losing 7 lbs a month without trying. I have to eat or the gut hurts..then if delayed the colon will act up and make for a miserable time.
thanks for any help..but do reply soon. I don’t want to dig a grave just yet.
Jen – I’ve never tried making cabbage juice with red cabbage, but I bet it would work. Try it and then post back here with your results.
Kathy – It sounds like you need to see a doctor. As much as I don’t like doctors it will be good to see one to get an initial diagnosis of what is going on. As far as the cabbage juice goes – try following the instructions I post here exactly – especially initially. I’ve tried my method and know it works. Once you know what the final results should be like you’ll have something to compare your experimenting to.
I have had Ulcerative Colitis for 7 years now…without one minute of relief. I feel like the walking dead (some say I look the part too!). I’m on 50mg of Prednisilone and 2000mg sulfasalazine a day and I HATE IT!! Interrupted sleep, mood swings, hallucinations, acne, lethargy, increased symptoms of U.C. (believe it or not), without mentioning the toll it takes on my wife, kids, sex life, social life, etc…..one can’t blame me for being a bit apprehensive. With all due respect, all the websites I’ve been on with the juices and organic foods, S.C.D., promised cures/treatments and so on have had a disclaimer the size of the Great Wall of China!!
How do I know this will help? So many people have questions, but very little people have written in support…can you offer any? Any testimonials? Will you even write back as so many others haven’t?
Thanks for your time
Kris – I understand your frustrations, but you’ve just got to try new things and see if they work. Fermented Cabbage juice might not work for you, but is it worth trying – yes. It’s cheap and easy to make. Give it a shot for a month and if it doesn’t work move on. Cut out all artificial sugars – sweets and soft drinks, and start getting in a good dose of Omega 3 fatty acids. I eat a couple cans of kipper snacks daily and that gets me a good dose of those good fats.
I’ve been there, and I know how crappy a big dose of pred is. I’ve had all the same side effects you’ve had – the mood swings and acne, a moon face.
It may be time to find a new doctor. It sounds like things haven’t gotten better with your current one. Really – try the cabbage juice. I can’t promise a cure, but I really think it will help. Drink a cup mixed with water everyday for a month and come back here and tell us how it went.
I think I am ready to try your cabbage juice recipe but I had a question. Do you keep the juice that is fermenting in the fridge for those 3 days?
Thanks so much for your help!
Removing my mercury fillings greatly improved my Chrohn’s symptoms (following a thorough chelation and sauna program). I saw a dentist who specializes in mercury removal and made sure they used a special air-sucking device and rubber dam. Chrohn’s is often caused by high toxin load (mercury) in the gut that causes inflammation. So a good diet with lots of healthy foods and low sugar/wheat is a great help in the detox process.
Oops, and I meant to say that cabbage juice really helps the symptoms during the detox stage.
Wondering why fermented cabbage juice and not just regular cabbage juice? I have never heard this before so I was interested
Thanks
@ Amy – Nope. While the Cabbage is fermenting for 3 days you want it to be room temperature, so leave it on the counter.
@Cheryl – When the cabbage is fermented lots of beneficial bacteria are generated. The beneficial bacteria add to the healing properties of the drink.
I made some red fermented cabbage juice, and it has now been in the fridge for 2 weeks…. it has a few globs of white on top, that look like mold….. has any one had this experience??? is this type of mold healthy???
I have leaky gut syndrome, candida, gluten intolerance, kidney pain, have had 4 bouts of kidney stone removal, am allergic to milk casein, wheat, rice, corn, oats, barley, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and have been with SCD diet 2 yrs with no real change tho it did help to get me realizing how I can change my diet. Breaking habits is hard to do. I have juiced carrots and apples but this sounds more like what I need to do, except I need the fiber of the cabbage so will instead just make the kraut.
I have only been diagnosed with IBS but have had GI test and Saliva Test for Candida. GI test showed my allergies and the Candida was also a good thing to know about. Spit in a clean clear glass of tap water first thing of am. and if it doesn’t make legs down into the water you have no candida that is causing your trouble. If you do seek help to find a way to control that. It can really take your health down.
I have a stomach ulcer (gastritis) is what my doctor called it, however, no H Pilori bacteria, which I,ve had for the past five or six years. I am on Pariet 20mg once a day but the pain is always there, and by now, even not eating salt or any other strong spices or vinagry dressings, no coffee, pop, munchies of any kind, I am limited to eatin rice, bananas, sweet potatoes, a bit of salad with olive oil & yogurt mixed together, very bland foods. I miss my coffee and occasional glass of wine !!!! It makes socializing very limiting and dull! Will this help for this type of ulcer also?
My name is Jennifer I suffered from crohn’s disease for years, please visit http://www.crohnsdisease.net for more information about the disease and watch my video how I over came crohn’s disease.
Just thought I would add my experiences on how I overcame diverticulitis and a peptic ulcer. My stomach ulcer was caused by aspirin and not H. pylori. For my stomach ulcer I used : DGL (a form of licorice root extract), marshmallow root, digestive enzymes (during big meals), 20 billion ct. of probiotics. The licorice root will stimulate the stomach cells to produce more mucus, the body’s natural defense against stomach acid. The marshmallow root, w/ water, coats the stomach with a protective layer, this kind of acts like a bandage for the ulcer. The digestive enzymes and probiotics help soothe the GI tract by breaking down proteins and fats into simpler compounds that the digestive tract can more easily digestive, therefore less stomach acid is needed to break your food down. I stopped taking the marshmallow root because it can prevent nutrient absorption, but that is the only side-effect using it, so space it between meals. I mainly used marshmallow root towards the beginning of the ulcer formation, it really helps relieve the upset stomach at the beginning. I have just started adding cabbage juice (literally just downed first glass) to my daily regime because it has an amino acid in its raw state called glutamine, which the GI systems uses more than any other amino acid, for healing and regeneration, also this will further enhance the healthy bacteria added to my diet, due to the natural fermentation. Dairy products can be a good source of probiotics, but with an unhealthy digestive tract, the GI system might not be able to digestive the lactose sugars from dairy, which will further upset your stomach, plus all the extra saturated fats that will be added to the diet. I have also been using bentonite, once daily, this is a clay that will cover the stomach with another protective layer on a empty stomach, about 3-4 hours after my last meal, I have found this to perform about the same as marshmallow root. It comes in a liquid form, so it is a little easier to take than than more pills. But before you starting eating clay in your back yard, try the sterilized, clean form at your local whole foods. Another one of nature’s protective layer’s is slippery elm, which acts like marshmallow root, but try one at a time, not all three. Then there is the synthetic form called pepto bismol, which will act as another protective layer for your stomach and has been shown to inhibit H. pylori. The main attraction to me to start using the cabbage juice is in 1949 a group of researchers at Standford University School of Medicine decided to put this virtuous vegetable to the test. In the study, 13 people with ulcers drank 1 liter of raw cabbage juice every day. They healed six times faster than people whose only treatment was the standard bland diet, which means about a week and a half of healing compared to 6-8 weeks. All of this said, not coffee, nicotine, alcohol or big meals until it is completely healed, usually 6-8 weeks, otherwise you will go back to suffering. All said, Licorice root (use DGL form), probiotics and cabbage juice, I believe would be the perfect healing combination for an Ulcer, including antibiotics if you have H. Pylori. Along with a good diet.
And for my diverticulitis, I was put on antibiotics for two weeks, then followed up with fiber, probiotics, and a well rounded diet (lots of vegetables, fruits and grains), and have had not symptoms with this one since. Hope this helps.
Hi everyone. I’m doing some research trying to help my niece who has crohns. Actually I started looking for an article that I had come across several years ago about a woman who had crohns. She and her doctor came at the disease as an inflamation of the bowel and they kept working different anti-biotics until they found the right mix. She claimed to be symptom free for over a year at the writing. However if it was such a great fix why don’t you guys all know about it? I would say either it’s not true or that tactic donesn’t work for everyone. I just can’t see her not pushing the concept out there to help others.
Is anyone familiar with this story from 10 ish years ago? I would really like to re-read it and give it to TR.
Thanks for the cabbage juice info, I’ll be sharing this with her for sure.
Good luck all, my best thoughts and wishes for each of you.
Deb
So, with all the comments here I have to assume that either her story is not true or you guys are aware of it and it doesn’t work for everyone. Is that a fair statement
Hi Everyone,
I am Sameer from India. I have been diagnosed with Chrohn’s diesease roughlty two years back. At present I am on Pentassa 500mg medication, 2 tablets three times. I am highly impressed with Cultured cabbage juice. Could u please tell me, can I have Pentassa medication and cultured cabbage juice at the same time?
@Matt – Are u still taking cultured cabbage juice? Could you please share your recent experience?
I have read all the posts on here..I have IBS..but…recently I have an ulcer that didnt show itself till I went thru stomach virus..diahrrea which prompted me to use flavored pedialyte…bad mistake..it upset the ulcer and then I got clear pedialyte which was better and diahrrea stopped ..my mouth got ulcers and i got some nystatin, big mistake…it upset the ulcer worse as I swallowed it ..its a mouth rinse for thrush and ulcers..the thrush and ulcers in the mouth were really from the ulcer in my digestive tract..by then I was burning so badly i took some famotidine..20mgs twice daily…big mistake again..Im full of them…i began to have problems with shoulder pain radiating from my chest, head ache and moods swings, depression and axiety…other side affects as well. i didnt know it was the famotidine..I thought it might be the nystatin as it was a different brand name…until I got off the nystatin did I realize the only thing the nystatin was causing was burning of ulcer…I discovered it was the famotidine…I only took it 4 days maybe one time over that..and had already started cutting it down like halfing it then quartering it and removing a quarter..I had done that for 1 day and began to feel so weak…I was shocked at that..then I stayed that way and then finally on the actual 4th day went cold turkey…quit..I felt fine that day just some burning in the stomach..I was told by the pharmacy that i shouldnt have rebound because I didnt take it that long..but i did have rebound..and drank water all day…also at this time I had a sleep study done for snoring…they discovered i had nocturnal panic attacks…which I thinkn was broght on by stress but also by the ulcer ..so that next day after getting off cold turkey from the famotidine…I thought I was going to die…not from burn but from such a weakness of not sleeping and lethargy and exhaustion…that I went to the emergency…I told them everything andthey gave me demerol for pain and ativan or whatever its called for anxiety and protonix…i knew that the protonix was for me..I prayed about this…and this dr not knowing my prayers gave me some protonix…and I also went and got some to take…I was given the generic and I dont like this but i hve taken one and its ok…it cools down my ulcer so I can breathe better and not have hopefully nocturnal panic attacks or that my brain is able to shut off so I can sleep…i slept like a baby last nite…hope this continues….now…I have read all about the cabbage drink and had fully intended to make it for myself but was feeling to poorly to do it…its a lot of work…when I am able to make it….is it ok to take while taking protonix…I am going to stay on the protonix until my ulcer is healed then go down from the 40mgs to the 20mgs then get off which theer will be a big rebound…so get ready…but the ulcer will be gone and then Im going to stay on the cabbage regime and the liccorice as well and find a good probiotic that works with me….I think thse three things are good…I did read about coconut oil….if you never have….coconut oil is good for ulcers and also has a antibiotic property to it….bring it up and read about it…ok…that is my inclusion into this helpful place…thank you so much for anyone speaking to help anyoneout..I just need to know if there are any side affects of taking pantoprazole which is protonix with cabbage juice…God bless
hi! i’ve been making cultured cabbage juice and would like to know how long can it be safely stored in the fridge? i have a batch that has been in there for 2 weeks or so after fermenting it – it has no visible mold or “blobs” like Madison mentioned – and it smells fine, just a bit stronger than it had been…is it ok to drink?
thanks!
Hi. I made fermented cabbage juice for the first time and it does pack a wallop, doesn’t it.
I do one thing different from all the recipes I see: instead of pureeing the cabbage in a blender, I first chop it up with a knife and then pass it through a slow-moving, single-auger, electric grinder/juicer (old Omega) along with a stalk of celery (for organic sodium). My reason being to avoid the possible vitamin-C-killing from the high speed whirring blades of a blender, but that is just my thinking.
Then I collect both the juice and the sludge, add water, and place it into a large jar, cover it, same as you do, and stick it somewhere away from light. That’s it. Because our house is cold, it has to sit for longer than your recipe takes.
Thanks for your site and all your trouble & hard work. Best of health to everyone here! – Wyan.
I make sauerkraut and it has to kept under water all the time. this water becomes the same as cultured cabbage juice. It then keeps nearly indefinetly in a cool place, covered with a cloth. It may sometimes get white plaques on top (fungus) so you just pick it off and the kraut and it’s water are not harmed.
So your cultured juice is the same – I just started some for the first time but and added 1/2 cup of my kraut juice. Drank it yesterday for the first time, pure, after 3 days. It is lightly sour but is fermented. If you don’t like a strong taste, make a smaller batch often. The longer you keep it, the more sour it will taste. I don’t know if a longer time makes it healthier but 3 days is supposed to be fine as long as it has fermented. It’s the same recipe as Matt S
This is for Jennifer. Her post was from 2010 so I’m not sure if she’ll see this. Went to the website she recommended but couldn’t find her video. I will ck youtube.
I have ulcerative colitis and tried raw cabbage juice just a few days about six months ago and my flare (which was bad) was gone in that short time. Am just starting it again and plan on continuing it indefinitely. The fermented juice has been recommended but raw is so much easier. Haven’t learned to like the taste and it burns my throat but it sure helps my other end. Good luck and God Bless.
i have crohns and duodenal ulcers i will like to introduce the cabbage juice diet. do i need to eat whilst on it?
hi.i just find i have crohns disease and i would like to know is cabbage juice good for me?

We believe that everyone should be able to access quality, proven, and vetted CBD products from CBD oil tinctures, CBD capsules, CBD gummies, CBD edibles, CBD flower & CBG flower. Element Earth CBD is there for beginners and veterans of CBD products, whether it be a 500mg broad-spectrum tincture, to a 3000mg full spectrum tincture. We strongly believe in education about Cannabidiol (CBD) and its many positive effects that can help with everyday anxiety to severe anxiety, from moderate pain to life-changing pain, and using this truly remarkable plant perhaps just as a daily supplement. The brands we sell only are made in the USA only; all hemp is grown specifically on prominent USA farms from Vermont to Colorado. As CBD grows in popularity, and for very good reason, we study all the new technology and new formulas; we thoroughly read all lab reports to endure the users are purchasing what was advertised. While making any claims, at the moment, which is unsubstantiated can cause trouble with the FDA, but, we are finding more and more that the veil is being lifted on a lot of these claims. Which is great news as hemp as been unfortunately under the Controlled Substances category for almost 100 years, finally the 2018 Farm Bill has lifted this categorization. While there are plenty of gray areas in terms of legality with certain products, mostly hemp-infused products and the actual hemp flower, day by day we see progress being made. CBD and related cannabinoids will not impair you nor intoxicate; the ingredients alone are all nutritious in origin.
Element Earth’s core values are complete transparency, most reliable brands and products, and the best client service needed. We do not believe in price gouging or constant contact through emails if we contact you it will be only for your benefit and none other. Our lineup of CBD products have all of the pertinent information needed such as ingredients, lab certificates, and every analysis possible. In the past year, a certain amount of CBD manufacturers have been caught cutting corners in quality and ingredients just to get ahead of the rest. While we understand every company needs an “edge”, we take these violations very seriously as they do more harm than good, and are only put in place to get you, the consumer, to purchase their wares. Such companies you will never find in our portfolio, ever. The research has been done for you, primarily because we understand the industry, we understand the importance of the impact Cannabidiol has and will continue to positively have on our way of life. Our motto is “The Element of Wellness” because we believe it’s just that, an element from the earth, that has been so intertwined with our lives going back to the beginning of mankind’s first staple crops, and little know that hemp has always been one of them. We hope you will see our value-added benefits, and understand your health is the priority.
