The Culture of Cabbage Juice

Using Cabbage Juice to Help Heal an Injured Gut
So you’ve been outside all day, working hard. You’re tired – Ready for a comfortable seat and some cabbage juice.
Cabbage juice is probably not the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a refreshing drink, but it is a potent anti-inflammatory and a powerful aid to help heal an injured gut.
My first experience with cabbage juice came when I was 14 or so. I was sick and my parents were trying everything they could do to get me well. Our doctor recommended talking to a local couple that had healed their son with Crohns disease by having him drink cabbage juice. The night we were scheduled to go over to their house the weather was terrible. It was a mix of snow and freezing rain, and the roads were slick. I still remember spinning out in the little black Nissan Sentra we used to have, but we made it home safely.
We went out and bought a juicer and my dear mom would juice me cabbage. At the time I couldn’t stand the taste, and she would add some lemon juice which would just make it worse. Hint: Mix carrots with the cabbage for a better tasting juice. Don’t add lemon juice! Eventually, she just stopped making it because I wouldn’t drink it.
Years went by and I forgot about the whole episode. But in college when I was really trying to get my health under control I found some information on cabbage juice, dusted off the juicer (yes, it still worked!) and bought some cabbage.
Apparently in 1949 a man named Dr Garnett Cheney began to study the effects of cabbage juice on stomach ulcers. The findings showed that patients with stomach ulcers that drank 4 glasses of raw cabbage juice a day healed in 4 to 10 days. Patients that had normal treatments were in the hospital for an average of 30 days. Apparently there is an active compound in cabbage juice called vitamin U that heals ulcers. This works not only on the stomach, but also in the digestive tract.
I have never drunk 4 glasses of cabbage juice in one day; I think at the max I’ve drunk two. But its nice to know that if I ever felt like overdoing it that it would be OK
. Seriously, you can make some great tasting drinks by combing carrot and other juices with the cabbage to make it more palatable. I highly recommend the book The Juicman’s Power of Juicing for some great juicing recipes. Right now its going for $1.98 used on Amazon.
I was following a thread about Dr. Cheney’s cabbage juice studies and ran across a discussion about the effectiveness of
DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) in the treatment of peptic ulcers. Makes me wonder if anyone has any experience with licorice and its effects on IBD. Or, if you can imagine, a little licorice with your cabbage juice.
Yea, that would make a heck of a drink. Cabbage juice and licorice mmm…
Cabbage juice by itself is surprisingly pallitable. For a while I had to mix it with other stuff to get it down, but I just had a glass of it last night.. straight no chaser.
ill have to try that. if i can make a good tasting variety then i will give it a go in my regular diet. whats the ratio of cabbage to carrot (or other options)?
Cool… the taste of cabbage juice is something you’ll have to get used to.
If you get a juicer start with some tastier juices like Apple Ginger or some other fruit juices. Once your ready to move on to veggie juices a good combo would be half a head of a medium cabbage and 4-5 good size carrots. You could add half a handful of parsley to get a little extra flavor in there too. I’m at a point now where I like just raw cabbage juice, but it took a little while to get there
.
The Juicemans Power of Juicing is the best book on juicing and it has some great recipes in it. I think I picked it up for like $6 new.
I’ll also add that its important to buy organic veggies, especially when you are juicing because everything gets concentrated including any pesticides / herbicides (half a head of cabbage and 4 carrots makes about a cup and a half of juice)
Is there somewhere that I would be able to order organic cabbage juice?
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MORE PEOPLE HAVE RESPONDED ON THIS CABBAGE JUICE OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO OBTAIN IT AN EASIER WAY THEN FIXING IT YOURSELF.
i want to know how much a cabbage juice works on ulcerative colitis patient as my husband is suffering from it.
Hi,
I would just like to add that I read that the beneficial ingredients are concentrated in the dark green outer leaves rather than the paler inner leaves.
Stay away from savoy cabbage and loose leaf greens, they taste bitter. Also if the cabbage is yellowing or wilting it is pretty rank, get as fresh as possible ‘normal’ cabbage and it’s taste is sort of similar to fresh peas.
I found it hard to find cabbages with these leaves still on them, I have started growing my own as loose headed plants and just pick off leaves as required.
There is also the option of keeping one plant in the greenhouse and just picking leaves off it, know of someone who kept it going for 2 years like this. (Northern England).
will it work for Spastic colon and IBS.Predominant factor is trapped Gas or spasms 24×7
yes; 4 treatment of mild ulcerative colitis: 3 oz of cabbage juice 15 minutes before eating (I do in the morning) once a day (add a bit of pear when juicing to make it drinkable) worked really well and turned things around; i discovered this after 5 sessions of acupuncture, herbal remedy and strict diet (no uncooked fruit and mushed cooked vegetables) plus goat milk and yogurt (whole foods) had eased things a lot; but cabbage juice put a damper on it; I understand one needs to also do multi vitamin or eat fish as cabbage juice depletes iodine. my nutritionist told me cabbage juice gets rid of bad bacteria and fungi which is the root cause of colitis.
I would also like to know how can I purchase cabbage juice without making it myself to cure my colitis.
Making your own cabbage juice and drinking it immediately will provide more beneficial results as the potent enzymes and minerals won’t have a chance to oxidize. Combining freshly juiced bean sprouts would be a killer addition.
Does anyone have any suggestions re making cabbage at home: does the cabbage or juice ferment?
For the fiber that is from making cabbage juice I add the cabbage and carrots to meatloaf. They say its like having steak. Flavor is enhanced by adding the fiber off of juiced cabbage and carrots. Also look for smaller juicer so you can do a one serving drink w/o the mess to clean a big juicer. Not that hard to juice w/o juicer. Just use blender with chopped cabbage and some water, mix well to get all the juice out and tho diluted will help. Some find mashing cabbage with salt and fix like they would the old fashion kraut works but takes 3 to 4 wks..to make homemade kraut.
I found cabbage juice at Whole Foods tonight. This stuff is ….RANK!!! I mixed it with a little apple juice to get it down.
I have a gastric ulcer, finished my round of antibiotics more than a week ago and STILL having burning and tightness. Hoping this will help, will let you know! I plan to drink maybe about a 1/2 a cup to start see how I do, then twice a day if I do ok.
This stuff smells really bad and is really hard to get down if you don’t mix it with some other juice. I would recommend apple juice. But if it can help with ulcers, its definitely worth a try.
The best way to get any juice is to juice it yourself. I have never tried store bottled cabbage juice but I have tried canned carrot juice, which was pretty rank. Homemade carrot juice is excellent though.
Not sure how rank canned cabbage juice might be but the fresh stuff is pretty strong and I have to drink it in small sips. I read somewhere some years ago that if you are going to drink cabbage juice to go for the red cabbage because it had the same healing properties but also extra antioxidents that come with purple food.
Tried cabbage juice a few years ago when smy tomach began to burn and after consuming 1 glass did not have burning sensation in my stomach again for about a year and a half.
Unfortunately the burning did return, I went to see a doctor who told me to use pepcid for a month straight, he basicly blew me off. After 40 days of his treatment, things only got worse. Luckily my husband juiced some cabbage yesterday for me. I had a glass yesterday and it burned my throat and stomach going down. I really had a difficult time with it. Reluctant to drink it again today but I did and I have to say, so far today my stomach hasn”t burned at all! This is signifigant improvement, as I was in so much pain the last few days, was on the verge of tears…..
I will continue to drink for 10 days and see……………..
Mix cabbage and carrot juice together and start by taking the juice in a shot glass in the morning. Don’t smell it! I drink it slowly in a cup about 3 oz but my family has to do shots to get it down. Nothing can take the place of fresh juiced juice for health. Store sold juices are pasterurized and the enzymes destroyed.
Linda, what type of juicer do you have?
To Flea,
I just tried cabbage juice – juiced it myself and drank 2 ounces. WHich isn’t very much, but I read to start with no more than 4. I tend to react sensitively so I started with 2 ounces. However, after drinking it, my throat started to burn. How long did your burning last? Have you continued on it and does it continue to burn your throat? I am afraid to keep drinking it because of the burning in throat. Thanks for any answers.
I am drinking cabbage juice for acid reflux and my mouth, throat and stomach are burning. Is it dangerous to keep trying it?
I just tried cabbage juice; didn’t know about restricting the ounces. For my burning mouth I first tried a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil to no effect. Next I tried a tablespoon of fish oil. That has helped a lot.
Oddly enough, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease a few years ago and I had recently reached a point where if I put something into my mouth, I would feel like a boulder was going through my stomach and I felt near to passing out. I was afraid that I was close to either surgery or death. I bought some cabbages because I had read something somewhere about it but I didn’t have the faith to even try it. That was two weeks ago and then out of desperation I asked someone to juice one for me. I drank it down and I didnot get sick instead I felt soothed for the first time in I don’t know how long. So I continued on with it. I am finishing my second week of drinking raw cabbage juice. I am a million times improved. I am in shock over it. I cannot believe that something so simple could have saved me so much illness and agony over these past years. I have faith now in my survival.
If you don’t feel like making cabbage juice try a website I use called http://www.freshjuicedelivery.com the have some awesome cabbage juice
PEOPLE — the cabbage has to be fermented, “cultured” in order to work properly, to give your digestive tract the good bacteria and enzymes it needs to heal itself.
Google “cultured cabbage”. Very easy to make. You can even buy it at some grocery or health food stores pre-made.
First off, it does NOT need to be fermented. I had IBS and a gluten sensitivity for years. About a year and a half ago I did 4 oz of fresh squeezed red cabbage juice first thing in the morning, a half hour before dinner and last thing before bed. I did it religiously for two weeks and only used organic cabbage which both Whole Foods and Ralphs sell. In two weeks I was completely cured and now 18 months later I am doing it again and am on day 9 of the 14. I can see that the conditions that lead to needing it never go away so I’m just accepting that every year and a half I will do it. If I can change the oil in my car every 5k miles I can drink cabbage juice for two weeks once every 18 months. Sometimes I add an organic carrot and sometimes a few stalks of celery. IT WORKS FOLKS!
In 2008 I was diagnosed with gastritis and an ulcer. The doctor first had me take Prevacid and then Nexium. I took the prescription for 3 weeks and it did nothing. Ok, well maybe not.. it took away my symptoms, but as soon as I stopped taking it my symptoms came back. I asked the doctor how much longer I would have to take this medication and he said atleast 3 more months. Enough was enough. I realized the meds were like putting a band aide on a cut but the cut (underlying issue) never heals. I went to see an eastern medicine doctor who told me to make cabbage juice and soup and eat it for a week and stop and see how I feel. I did this and it WORKED. I went back to the gastroenterologist for a followup and told him my experience, needless to say he was not convinced and said “oh thats just a coincidence, besides I would not go see an eastern medicine doctor if I were you”. Why not? Could it be because if I get cured I wont be coming to see you anymore and you will have one less patient to treat?
Per dr’s order I was to have my colon removed because the Ulcerative Colitis was terrible. That was Jan. 2011, as of June 6, 2011 (Today) all is under control and no surgery. I could not take the medicine that was prescribe horrible side effects and even though the medicine they give you CAUSES SIDE EFFECTS of Ulcerative Colitis, and so you never know your getting better. Horrible. And the Flagyl medicine given for C-Diff definately causes cancer in Rats and Mice (and has a black box FDA WARNING.) BUT DOCTORS DON’T TELL YOU THAT. So I started drinking Cabbage Juice . Started out slow 4oz every 8 hours on the nose. Like taking an ANTIBOTIC I did this slowly and continuinally. I did this for about 20 days and then I did about 6-7oz daily 1 time a day for another 20 days to make sure. (Cabbage taste nasty but after awhile I started to add about 3 carrots to it to take away the taste. All the more vitamins. I did it for about 40 days total ….and ALL WAS FINE. NEVER HAD THE SURGERY and if I think it will flare up I start drinking back the Cabbage Juice. Cabbage Juice has in it GLUTAMINE and it heals the intestinal walls etc. I RECENTLY STARTED DRINKING BEET JUICE TO CLEANSE MY BLOOD AND CREATE NEW BLOOD CELLS AND I ALSO ADD A CARROT TO THAT BECAUSE IT IS STRONG. I JUICE EVERYTHING TODAY. INSTEAD OF TAKING A VITAMIN AND WAITING FOR THE CAPSULES TO DISSOLVE ETC. I BROUGHT A WARING PRO JUICER FROM SEARS 62.99 AND JUICE EVERYTHING. I ALSO DO LEMONS WHICH IS GREAT. SO ALL WORKED OUT ! PRAISE THE LORD.

I just bought a juicer today. My naturopath told me to take cabbage juice for my UC. I juiced a whole cabbage and got about 18 oz. Is that normal? I will have to buy a whole fridge for my cabbages! Anyway, we’ll see how it works. I am pretty sick and I quit taking my drugs that the GI dr prescribed so I hope this works!
I read your cabbage juice post and wanted to know how u r currently doing and how u r feeling.
I believe my IBS was caused by a food poisoning incident.
I suffer with nausea, stomach spasms and gas, bloating/distention and diarrhea.
My diet is exceptional, I am a trainer and run a huge gym (exercise 6 days a week(.
I started making the organic red cabbage juice today (am about to take the 2nd dose).
Another question: If I make 20 ounces today, how long can I keep it before it loses its potency?
Please tell me your thoughts.
I am at my wit’s end with UC. I finally dug out my ‘kitchen pharmacy’ book and had a look in that. It mentioned that cabbage has many proven healing properties and that it heals ulcers both inside and out. So I had a look on the Internet and found this and other sites. So I got my Betterhalf to buy me some cabbages and I am going to start tonight.
Information for Mitchael M.. According to the Internet, the juice has to be used within 3 days.
Have already started taking cabbage juice twice a day
Its working it seems. but im experiencing a lot of gas realted problem, also i can feel it has a cooling effect which causes sneezing and cold, please advise how to deal with gas, and how long can this juice be taken for maximum results…..
we started cabbage juice with my daughter who is 21 after 3 days of juice no blood in toilet for the first time in months.

CHENEY WHO IS THE ONE WHO ACTUALLY USED IT ON HIS PATIENTS AND CURED THEIR STOMACH ISSUES….HE HAS GREAT INFO ON ALL SORTS OF OTHER PROBLEMS TOO..DEFINATELY WORTH THE TIME TO READ..AND DONT KNOCK IT UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY TRY IT.
I have been suffering for ULCERATIVE COLITIS for the past 6 years, in the earlier years I didnt have a clue of what it was and was too scared to go for a colonoscopy test. At the time I was 22 years of age. I am now 28 and last year I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis after having the test. My doctor prescribed me medication ( 8 tablets a day) which I have been taking religiously for the past 1 year.
Quite recently I have experiencing some weight gain and my appatite for food has increased, therefore I have stopped taking my medication, its now been 6 weeks. I would say my condition is not so really bad, its not so serious not so sever ie having to go to the washroom several time a day or seeing any blood in my stool.
Just the other day I was recommended and introduced to juicing by a friend. I did lots of research on the internet about jucing vegetables and fruits and how beneficial they can be to our bodies.
I was really interested and commited, so I looked online and came across a website and purchased a juicer called the andrew james power juicer on a budget of £40. Once the juicer was delivered I went straight to the fruit and veg market and purchased a whole lot of fruits and veg
Today is my second day of jucing, I must be honest in saying veggies may not taste so nice, but you may add some apple for taste.
I was always aware of how cabbage juice could help heal stomach ailments IBS IBD CHROHNS COLITS PEPTIC ULCER, but was never really keen on having a go and giving it a try, just the thought of cabbage juice would put me off. Today I have juiced 4oz of cabbage along with 2 carrots and to my surprise it didn’t really taste too bad
I shall carry on jucing cabbage juice and hopefully become free of ULCERATIVE COLITIS, fingers crossed.
Dilute your cabbage juice and it will be much better tolerated. There is no law that says you have to drink it straight out of the juicer. I used to be able to buy cans of cabbage juice at the grocery store in New Orleans/Metaire, back in the 60′s through early 80′s, but it fell out of favor. It was sold right next to the cans of carrot juice, and fruit nectars. I loved St. Petersburg, Florida when I lived there in the late 50′s and early 60′s. Main street was populated with fresh juice stands which squeezed fruits and vegetables while you waited. My favorite was fresh coconut milk and juice with fresh pineapple and orange mixed in. You didn’t have to own a juicer, you could buy it by the gallon and take it home.
Be sure to check that your juicer is one that breaks down the cell walls with special shredders. You get a lot more with your money. The pulp should be almost dry. I always use the pulp to make soft or crisp tacos with by mixing it with some seasoning of choice (doesn’t have to Mexican, can be Chinese, Thai, Italian, etc.). Just smear a lot on the taco, add other fillings of choice and get all that wonderful fiber into your system instead of throwing it away.
More and more like blogger article, there was a time not to blogger space, the hope can bloggers are some good articles as soon as possible
